Building Africa for the Long Term by GREA CEO, Greg Pearson

Private equity investments into Africa have remained relatively stable through the cycle, although preference is given to deals in technology-enabled companies. This has some interesting implications for the built environment across the continent, with the rise of niche property asset classes such as corporate accommodation, data centres, warehousing & logistics, education, and healthcare.

Gateway Real Estate Africa (“GREA”) is uniquely positioned as the bridge between private equity and bespoke, turnkey infrastructure development on the continent. At the same time, we add value to the economies and communities in which we operate, through local procurement, professional skills transfer and infrastructure development.

Despite being a relatively young company, our team has immense depth and experience across a range of sectors, with a track record of successfully deploying US$ 400 million across five countries since inception in 2018.

Pre the pandemic we completed refurbishments to Anfa Place Shopping Centre in Morocco as well as a mud plant facility for Haliburton in Mozambique.

Notwithstanding the impact of Covid-19, we made extensive use of technology and leveraged our local partnerships to successfully complete extensive refurbishments to Metroplex Shopping Centre in Uganda. We also continued to deliver against timelines on our diplomatic housing development in Ethiopia and the upgrade of a warehouse facility for Bollore in Mozambique during several waves of the pandemic.

We are very proud of the fact that during this time, we broke ground on significant projects in Kenya (diplomatic housing), Nigeria (data centre), Mauritius (healthcare), and Ghana (office block).

The future for Africa’s built environment remains bullish, but will require continuous adaption, collaboration, and innovation.
That is why platforms such as EAPI is so important, enabling the sharing of ideas and finding solutions as an industry.

We invite you to join our Chief Investment Officer, Andre Janari, and our Chief Operating Officer, Shevira Bissessor on their respective panel discussions to unpack the headwinds, fundamental shifts and opportunities in the sector.
